Distinguished and Famous people from Melton

🤝 Hannah “Grannie” Watts

Hannah Watts combined farming, family responsibilities and midwifery in Melton and Toolern Vale. Born in Ireland in 1831, she migrated in 1854 and later purchased land in her own name, an unusual step for a woman of that period. Her growing reputation led to a formal practice and, eventually, Lynch Cottage in Melton, registered as a private hospital in 1911. Her careful records list 442 births between 1886 and 1921. Known as Grannie Watts, she provided intimate, practical care across generations, leaving a local legacy measured in families as much as buildings or official positions.

🌾 Simon and Samuel Staughton

The Staughton family became major pastoral landholders around Melton during the nineteenth century. After Simon Staughton’s death in 1863, his sons initially worked the holdings together before dividing them in 1870. Samuel’s share became Eynesbury, with its substantial homestead and station landscape. The family’s story reveals the scale of land concentration during colonial pastoral expansion, as well as the later division of large estates. Names still encountered around the district recall those holdings, but the buildings and property histories provide the more concrete link between a family enterprise and the changing plains.
